4 Common Reasons Behind Hair Loss

It is very true that men are more susceptible to hair loss than women are because male pattern baldness is very common. However hair loss and  thinning hair are  very common when it comes to women as well. Losing hair can cause a big fracture in anyone’s ego. From having a crop of hair to having barely any on your head can be pretty disturbing. There are plenty reasons as to why someone loses hair. The reason can be very simple and it can be complex as well. Vitamin deficiency is a simple reason and having a health condition is more serious one. There are a number of ways  to treat both female and male hair loss. Given below are a few reasons as to why hair fall occurs:

  1. Physical stress: There are many upsetting incidents we face on a day to day basis. It can be just simple sadness or something like a physical trauma like a car accident, a surgery or a severe illness like the flu. This type of hair loss is called telogen effluvium. When you go through stressful events, you can shock the hair cycle which has three phases, namely- growth phase, shedding phase and rest phase. A stressful event makes the shedding phase  more dominant. When you face a severe trauma, the hair loss actually starts becoming visible. The good thing about this type of hair loss is that it’s very temporary and the hair will regrow once the  body starts to recover. A dandruff shampoo can play a major role in keeping your scalp clean and aiding in the hair growth.
  2. Pregnancy: Pregnancy is also a type  of physical stress that can cause an immense amount of hair loss along with hormones. This kind of hair loss is more common once the baby has been delivered. This is because giving birth is a very traumatic experience. If you experience hair loss after the birth, all you can do is wait. It is again very temporary and will go back to normal in no time.
  3. An excessive consumption of vitamin A: Overdosing on Vitamin A supplements and medications have been proven to trigger excessive hair loss. The daily consumption of vitamin A should be 5,000 IU (International Units). Supplements have the amount anywhere between 2,500 – 10,000 international units. However, this isn’t something you should worry too much about because it is reversible and once the excessive supply of Vitamin A is stopped, your body will grow hair naturally and normally.
  4. Hereditary hair loss: Just like male pattern baldness, females go through something similar, known as androgenic alopecia. When you have parents or close relatives who show signs of hair loss at a certain age then you can be more susceptible to it. Women don’t have a receding hairline like men but might have a considerable amount of hair thinning. This can be stopped with the use of Rogaine (minoxidil). It can stop hair fall to a great extent and can maintain your hair. A medicated dandruff shampoo can play a big role in helping hair to grow back and medicines are available over the counter at the pharmacy as well.
